The next hearing of the European Parliament’s Committee of Inquiry into Money Laundering Tax Avoidance and Tax Evasion (PANA Committee) is going to take place in the morning of September 26, 2017. The hearing will be divided into two parts. During the first part (9.05 – 10.40 CET) the PANA Committee will look into the world of professional soccer. The second part of the hearing (10.40 – 12.05 CET) will be devoted to corporate tax planning.

 

Part I – The world of professional soccer

The first part of the hearing was triggered by the Football Leaks revelations. Members of the PANA Committee will ask questions to representatives of FIFA, UEFA and the European Football Agents Association. The introduction to this part of the hearing will be given by a journalist of NRC Handelsblad, who took part in the European Investigative Collaborations (EIC) network that investigated the Football Leaks files. Topics that are likely to be discussed are the transparency of the transfer market, the financing of European clubs and the question of players' portrait rights.

 

According to a draft programme that the European Parliament has published the following invitees will be questioned during the hearing:

·   Kimberly Morris, Head of TMS Global Transfers & Compliance - FIFA

·   Julien Zylberstein, legal counsel at UEFA

·   Gregor Reiter, Deutsche Fußballspieler-Vermittler Vereinigung E.V. - European Football Agents Association (EFAA)

·   Merijn Rengers, investigative journalist NRC Handelsblad - European Investigative Collaborations (EIC)

 

Part II – Corporate tax planning

The second part of the hearing will be devoted to corporate tax planning, with the participation of BASF. According to an announcement issued by the PANA Committee, it aimed at having a representative of Caterpillar present during this part of the hearing, but did the company decline the invitation. Nonetheless, ten minutes of the programme are reserved to make statements about Caterpillar.

 

The following persons will be present during this second part of the hearing to answer questions from the PANA Committee:

·   Bastian Brinkmann, Journalist from Süddeutsche Zeitung

·   Dr. Wolfgang Haas, President Legal, Taxes, Insurance & Intellectual Property - BASF

 

The hearing will take place on September 26, 2017 from 9.00 – 12.30 CET. A live webstream of the meeting will be made available by the European Parliament. This live webstream will be broadcasted here. (NB At this moment this webpage is not live yet)
