On November 25, 2015 the Swiss Federal Council adopted a dispatch on the agreement regarding the automatic exchange of information (AEOI) in tax matters with the EU and submitted it to Parliament for approval.

In formal terms, the signed agreement is a protocol amending the Agreement between the Swiss Confederation and the European Community providing for Measures Equivalent to those laid down in Council Directive 2003/48/EC on Taxation of Savings Income in the form of Interest Payments that has been in force since 2005. The Protocol was signed on May 27, 2015.

According to a press release published on the website of the Swiss Federal Department of Finance in this respect, the amended Agreement between Switzerland and the EU should come into force on January 1, 2017, and the first sets of data should be exchanged from 2018, provided the approval process is completed on time in Switzerland and in the EU. The agreement between Switzerland and the EU is applicable in Switzerland with regard to all 28 EU member states.
