(June 17, 2015)

In the morning of June 17, 2015 a meeting between the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Tax Rulings and other Measures Similar in Nature or Effect and representatives of national parliaments was held. During the meeting the Special Committee and the representatives exchanged views on aggressive tax planning. A VoD of this meeting is now available.

One item that was addressed on a regular basis was the potential introduction of a Common Consolidated Corporate Tax Base (CCCTB).

Another item that was tabled a few time was the frustration that several members of the Special Committee seem to have regarding the fact that multinationals have friendly declined their invitations to appear at hearing to be conducted by the Special Committee. It was a few times stated that the European Parliament does not have the power to demand multinational corporations to appear at a hearing. And the frustration about that seems to be big. Therefore Members from the Special Committee a few times called out for help from the national parliaments in this respect. Suggestions were made that national parliaments use their powers to demand multinational corporations to appear for a hearing in a national parliament. The idea then is that Members of the European Parliament’s Special Committee are invited to also attend such a hearing of a national parliament.
